Boyscout-Built Breeder Reactor
Growing up next to the “Bomb Plant”, I’m always interested in Nuclear stuff. David Hahn, persuing his Eagle Scout merits, built a Breeder Reactor in his shed. All of the parts were available, it just took some digging to get everything needed. After irradiating the neighborhood, he dismantled it, but was soon discovered. Read the whole story below.
What happened when a teenager tried a dangerous experiment in his back yardTale of the Radioactive Boy Scout.
FROM HARPER’S MAGAZINE BY KEN SILVERSTEIN
Golf Manor, a subdivision in Commerce Township, Mich., some 25 miles outside of Detroit, is the kind of place where nothing unusual is supposed to happen, where the only thing lurking around the corner is an ice-cream truck. But June 26, 1995, was not a typical day.Ask Dottie Pease. Cruising down Pinto Drive, Pease saw half a dozen men crossing her neighbor’s lawn. Three, in respirators and white moon suits, were dismantling her next-door neighbor’s shed with electric saws, stuffing the pieces into large steel drums emblazoned with radioactive warning signs.Huddled with a group of neighbors, Pease was nervous. “I was pretty disturbed,” she recalls. Publicly, the employees of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that day said there was nothing to fear. The truth is far more bizarre: the shed was dangerously irradiated and, according to the EPA, up to 40,000 residents of the area could be at risk. The cleanup was provoked by the boy next door, David Hahn. He had attempted to build a nuclear reactor in his mother’s shed following a Boy Scout merit-badge project.

The Snatch! – Extraordinary Rendition
Extraordinary Rendition is process of “Snatching” a suspected bad guy from another nation or an American airport and outsourcing their torture to other countries.Osama Hassan Mustafa Nasr, a muslim cleric, was snatched as he left his mosque in 2001. The Italian government has issued warrants for CIA operatives. A similar case occurred with a Canadian who was snatched at JFK. The canadian government conveniently swept it under the carpet for money. Diplomacy at it’s best!
Egypt Cleric Says Americans Tortured HimBy NADIA ABOU EL-MAGD Associated Press Writer
February 25,2007 | CAIRO, Egypt — An Egyptian cleric allegedly kidnapped off the streets of Italy by CIA agents in 2003 claimed Sunday that the Americans who abducted him “savagely” tortured him while deporting him to Egypt for interrogation. The allegations by Osama Hassan Mustafa Nasr, who also is known as Abu Omar, are likely to intensify criticism of the United States’ “extraordinary rendition” program. Italy has indicted 26 Americans and five Italian agents accused of seizing the cleric in 2003.Nasr told the pan-Arab satellite TV station Al-Jazeera that he “was savagely tortured by the CIA when kidnapped and during my deportation” to Egypt.

Guatemala Sinkhole
I read about this the other day. I believe it was on CNN, so I filed it under dramatic fluff. Well, here’s the pictures. Amazing! Follow the link below.
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala – A 330-foot-deep sinkhole killed at least two teenagers as it swallowed about a dozen homes early Friday and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people in a crowded Guatemala City neighborhood. Officials blamed the sinkhole on recent rains and an underground sewage flow from a ruptured main.

Mickey Avalon : Train Wreck = Amusing Rhymes… And Simon Rex Is Involved!
With a childhood rough enough to guarantee him rock star success, by the time he was out of his teenage years — at least according to the few details he’s given — Mickey Avalon had sold pot (with his mother), been addicted to heroin and dope, worked as a graffiti artist in L.A., converted to Orthodox Judaism (his parents were both non-practicing Jews, and his paternal grandparents were survivors of Auschwitz), got married and had a daughter, prostituted himself for drug money, watched his father die, and found his sister’s dead body. All of this gave ample material for his rhymes, which he started writing after his pal, the former MTV VJ Simon Rex, encouraged him to compose his own songs.

Would It Sell?
Stuck in traffic, staring at the ass-end of a car I can’t afford, it came to me. Something that can sum up the mornings of the average Joe here in the “Nutmeg” state. Yes, it is a bumper sticker slogan:
“Brake if you love Connecticut Highways”
Had to mention it. Just spent an hour traveling 13 miles.
